Here's some backstory:

I was showing the dean my prototype Last Blade before she quickly lose interest...

Dean: No fighting game.

Dean: Fighting game is shallow and uninspiring, it's for violence loving delinquents like you and your friends.

Me: Okay Mrs. Dean (nerve is breaking) WHAT do you suggest then? (you old b*tch)

Dean: Kids nowadays love those anime RPGs, it would be a good way to increase enrollment if you can make one.

----end of flashback----

Okay Mrs Dean, you want JRPG? you got a JRPG. Introducing the remake of NES classic Crystalis (God Slayer in Japan) music is KOF XI Elizabeth's theme: Queen (I'm remaking an SNK game, might as well use awesome SNK musics!)

PS: this is a flash, loading may take a while

Queen is a very pumped up and energetic track. It pumped my head full of pictures conveying a new direction that Crystalis could go in. Namely a scrolling section where you run along a track occasionally hacking at enemies but mostly avoiding pitfalls. I imagine that the Rabbit Boots would be useful in collecting items that were on hard-to-reach platforms either to far or too high to reach. I also imagined what the main character would look like if he were incorporated in a fighting game like Brawl.

When I took Intro to Game Design, the instructor wanted us to make a game concept from start to finish. However, he said, "I don't want to see any violence. No violence, no blood. I don't want to see anything I've seen before. I don't want to see a fighting game, an RPG, an action game, unless you can take it in an entirely new direction. No pirates, no ninjas, no robots, and no pirate ninja robots unless you can weave them into a tale of intrigue that will impress me... which it can't." I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it (and he was Russian, which made it sound even more awesome than I could).

One guy was determined that he was going to make a JRPG style game that the instructor would actually like. Not even halfway through his pitch, the instructor stopped him and told him that it wasn't anything new and that he'd seen it a million times. The guy tried to object, but the instructor hit him hard and told him to start over. The guy dropped the class by the next week. :XD:

He seemed like he was being a hardass, but he was trying to get us thinking outside of all the over-done, stale genres that have been around for ages. Making another Mario is easy, trying to find a new and interesting twist that will be intriguing is hard.

heh he yeah, the way game design is wonder nothing ever gets done. -_- But I do not completely agree with the idea "it must be new and interesting", I simply think that games must be fun.

If you have to scrap your game for another game, Crystalis is a good one!

So I'm guessing the fighting game is scraped?
